For most of the last two decades, "search" meant one thing: rank on Google. That's no longer where the question ends. A growing share of research and buying decisions now start in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude — and those systems don't read a site the way Google's crawler does.
Three engines, three sets of rules
Traditional SEO is still the foundation — technical health, crawlability, and content that answers a real query. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about being the source an AI assistant quotes or cites when it answers a question directly, without sending a click. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) goes a step further: shaping how a brand is described when an AI generates a recommendation or comparison, not just a citation.
Ranking well in one doesn't guarantee visibility in the others. A page can sit on page one of Google and still never get pulled into an AI-generated answer, because the two systems are evaluating different things: link authority and query match for search, versus clarity, structure, and extractability for generative answers.
What actually changes in practice
- Content needs a clear, quotable answer near the top — not just keywords buried in a longer piece.
- Structured data and clean technical markup matter more, because AI systems parse structure, not just prose.
- Brand mentions across the web (reviews, forums, press) increasingly feed what generative engines say about a company, even without a direct link.

Where to start
None of this replaces the fundamentals — a fast, well-structured, genuinely useful site is still the base layer everything else builds on. The shift is in scope: search strategy now has to account for how AI systems read, extract, and repeat what's on a page, not only how a crawler indexes it.
